| Michael Carrick reveals how Cesc Fabregas denied him a dream move to Arsenal in 2004
| sbo666 Michael Carrick has revealed that he could have been an Arsenal player prior to joining Spurs in August 2004. Still with West Ham in the First Division at the time following their relegation from the top flight in May 2003, the midfielder was desperate to secure a move back to the Premier League.
Harry Redknapp, who he had worked with at Upton Park, was intent on signing him for Portsmouth, while Everton and Crystal Palace were also keen on luring him from east London. Fresh from going the 2003-04 league season unbeaten, Arsenal were also interested in bringing in Carrick to strengthen the midfield alongside Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva.
Looking set to join Portsmouth after arranging a medical at Fratton Park, Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein called the player's agent about a move to north London. Sat in Arsene Wenger's house just a matter of hours after leaving Portsmouth, the Frenchman told Carrick he would see him on the Monday after taking on Manchester United in the Community Shield. However, not everything went to plan as the Gunners beat the Red Devils 3-1 in Cardiff.
"I saw that a kid, Cesc Fabregas, sbo666 only 17, started in Vieira’s place," recalls Carrick in his autobiography, Michael Carrick: Between the Lines, which is being serialised by The Times . "Fabregas played a blinder but I didn’t think too much about the significance. "I sat at home on Sunday night waiting for the call to arrange details of the next day. Arsenal! I couldn’t wait.
"But I waited, and waited, and that call never came. "The next day, I had to go into training at West Ham instead and, on the way, David (his agent) phoned to say he’d had a call from Dein. "David relayed the gist of his message, like, "I’m sorry, the manager says we don’t need Michael. Fabregas is coming through like he is. Sorry, the deal’s off."
"Fabregas’s performance changed Wenger’s mind about needing me." Missing out on a move to the league champions, Carrick did eventually seal a move to north London days later as sbo666 he joined Spurs after receiving a call from then-sporting director Frank Arnesen. Impressing during his time at White Hart Lane, the midfielder wouldn't spend too long in the capital as he sealed a big-money move to Manchester United two years later.
